Earlier this month our Chaplaincy Team arranged for colleagues to visit to the Jamia Mosque Madni in Halifax to learn more about the Muslim faith and end-of-life care. The local Muslim community is the second largest faith group in Calderdale, and the feedback shows how useful the visit was.

End-of-Life Care Facilitator, Gillian Sykes, went along and fed back to Hospital Chaplain, Zeenat Hussain.

Gillian said: “I just wanted to say thank you very much for organising the event and for allowing me to join. It was excellent - well presented, insightful and welcoming. I came away with a greater understanding of the Muslim faith and priorities at end-of-life for Muslim patients, which will be very beneficial in my care for patients and their families. I've since spoken to a GP friend who has an ME role for Muslim patients, to further add to my knowledge.

“Thank you again for organising such an important event to raise awareness in NHS staff, helping us understand how to provide compassionate and high-quality care for Muslim patients at the end of their lives.”

Other feedback from attendees included:

  • Really useful session. Good mix of teaching about Islam faith and relevance to end-of-life care.
  • Really good being able to see the call to prayer and the room where deceased bodies are prepared.
  • I found this visit helped my understanding of Islam and how to care for patients of this faith.
  • We felt very welcome, and it was good to have the chance to see the Mosque in person and ask questions.
  • Really interesting session at the Mosque. Really loved it as did everyone I think.
